Chattanooga Vacation
Chattanooga, TN is located close to the Tennessee/Georgia State line and is on the Tennessee River and also borders the Chickamauga and Nickajack lakes. These lakes are a part of the Tennessee River. Chattanooga’s name is supposed to come from Cherokee possibly meaning “the big catch” or “to draw fish out of the water”. There was a Cherokee settlement at this bend in the Tennessee River as early as 1776 when a settlement was founded by Dragging Canoe, later John Ross established a settlement called Ross’s Landing. Finally the settlement was incorporated as Chattanooga in 1839.
The city saw quite a bit of military conflict during the Civil War with battles at Lookout Mountain which overlooks Chattanooga, Missionary Ridge and then the Battle of Chickamauga to the south just across the state line in Georgia.
